Peter Rod reviews Metallica The Club Dayz 1982-1984

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheerz to the Old Dayz!, April 10, 2009
By P. Rodriguez "Peter Rod" (New York)

In 1982 there was an underground movement in San Francisco that was born on the concepts of the NWOBHM, but taken to a whole new level, and Bill Hale was there to document it. Most people have heard the tales and stories of Metallica during the early years, but only have a few pictures and a grainy video to go on. If you were lucky enough to have been a fan in those dayz, Master of Puppets dayz, Black Album dayz, or have just discovered Metallica today, this book is a MUST! The pictorials are so real and raw, that it would even have "The Old Bridge Militia" jaws dropping with amazement. The book is based around 6 gigs starting in September of 1982 to September of 1983. Five out of the six shows are with Dave Mustaine on guitar and the first three are with Ron McGovney on bass and it kind of makes you wonder, "Hey Bill where are the shots with Lloyd Grant?"(Just Kidding). Some of the live shots that he took of the crush of the crowd against the stage, especially at The Old Waldorf show are so intense, that he actually captured a moment in time that makes you feel the energy and passion that Metallica had created between themselves and the Bay Area Faithful....Simply Amazing! One of the special moments in the book is the photo documentation of Cliff Burton's first gig with Metallica. Bill Captured the bell bottomed free spirited bass player back stage moments before he took the stage for the first time! That is not only Metallica history, but that is Rock & Roll history! "The Young Metal Attack" was just about to be transformed and ready for takeoff and it was all caught on film. Another very notable shot, which is almost like catching KISS without their makeup on in the 70's, is Dave Mustaine and Kirk Hammett backstage together, when Kirk was in Exodus and they were opening for Metallica. The beginning of the book starts with a few memoirs, most notably with Ron Quintana from "Metal Mania" fame. This is the man who coined the term Metallica, which now is a household name. It was great reading his recounts on the early dayz. Lastly, this book is just as much Rock & Roll history as when The Beatles played The Cavern Club all those times in their early dayz, but the only difference is, unfortunately for The Beatles, Bill Hale was not there to document the ride!

Thank You Bill Hale for opening up your vault! MUYA!

Steve Brownlee reviews Bill Hale

I can't WAIT to get my copy....and I'm not even a Metallica fan! But I am a fan of the work by Mr. Bill Hale! Having known Bill for well over 25 years (pushing 30 almost...yikes)and knowing his work....let's just say "Bill, you da man!" Your photos are pure art! What an eye! Your live shots capture every ounce of manic power...every drop of blood, sweat and tears. Your band portraits are the aces, mate! One of the best photographers on the scene! Proud and honored to call you friend.

Steven Rosen reviews Metallica The Club Dayz 1982-1984

Whenever a band rises to stadium-filling levels and sells boatloads of records, there is usually a lot of material like this book that materializes. These shots were meaningless when Metallica was still just a struggling metal band, but once they passed over to superstar status, these early photos gained a newfound status and value.

The author/photographer has apparently been shooting since 1979. He was the chief shooter for a heavy rock magazine called Metal Rendezvous International, and this status allowed him access to the then-fledgling band. This book contains photos from San Francisco clubs the Stone and the Old Waldorf, capturing the earliest images of the group's original lineup. This included guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney. Additionally, there are some historic photos of bassist Cliff Burton's first gig with the band, as well as Mustaine's final show and guitar player Kirk Hammett's debut appearance.

Here is how Hale himself described those early adventures:

"I was there with my camera at every one of their early Bay Area shows, live without a photo pit, crushed among the savage crowd as they headbanged fearlessly to their local heroes. It wasn't an easy gig by any means but it was an experience."

Indeed, being at the right place at the right time certainly paid dividends. There are some engaging shots here of the band live, backstage, and generally being rock hoodlums. If you're a diehard Metallica fan, you'll probably want to take a look.

Joel McIver reviews Metallica The Club Dayz 1982-1984

METALLICA: THE CLUB DAYZ
Bill Hale
«««
ECW Press, £13.99
ISBN 9781550228762
Thrashers’ underground roots exposed
As a photographer with the cult San Francisco mag Metal Rendezvous International in the early to mid-80s, Bill Hale was in the right place at the right time when it came to capturing Bay Area thrash at its peak. There’s still a gap in the market for a photo book covering the whole of that sprawling, influential scene, but The Club Dayz does a useful job of covering the rise of Metallica, that movement’s most successful band by several orders of magnitude.
Hale begins the journey on 18 September 1982 at the legendary San Fran venue The Stone, where Metallica’s pre-Cliff Burton line-up supported the briefly-acclaimed Hans Naughty and Bitch. Hale writes that this was the first show at which frontman James Hetfield (then a mere 19 years old) both sang and played guitar. Accompanied by the axe prodigy Dave Mustaine, the much put-upon bassist Ron McGovney and the weeny drummer Lars Ulrich, James bashed out a set based largely on Diamond Head covers. How times have changed…
The Club Dayz continues into 1983, with Ron replaced by the virtuoso Cliff Burton. By now the thrash scene was thriving, and musicians such as Paul Baloff and Kirk Hammett of Exodus and Katon DePena of Hirax make an appearance. Hale goes on to cover the Raven tour in spring ’83 and the beginning of Metallica’s ascension to international prominence. It’s all good, sweaty, mostly unpublished stuff, and highly amusing for anyone who can’t imagine the Led Zeppelin of our generation dressed in spandex and acne.
Extra text by North California industry legends Ron Quintana (who invented the name Metallica), Hale’s editor John Strednansky and metal guru Bob Nalbandian add bang for your bucks. Until fellow Metallica disciple and SF photographer Brian Lew does his own book, this is the one to track down. Joel McIver

New Review for Metallica The Club Dayz 1982-1984 from Sea Of Tranquility

Hale, Bill: Metallica-The Club Dayz 1982-1984 (book)

Though there's really not many pages here (112 to be exact), it's what's inside that really counts. Metallica-The Club Dayz 1982-1984 is a book put together by rock photographer Bill Hale, who spent 2 years with a young upstart metal band called Metallica back in the early 80's. Hale, using his personal photo collection of the band from those times (many of which have never been seen before) tells the tale of a young band, on the verge of discovering their powers and putting the building blocks in place that would soon help them take over the world. The early years of Ron McGovney and Dave Mustaine are here in glorious color and black & white, as are the critical time when Kirk Hammett and Cliff Burton joined the band in what became the turning point when Metallica quickly rose up to metal stardom. Through Hale's photos, you can see just what a talent Mustaine was at an early age, a guitar god in the making with plenty of stage persona, but his wild lifestyle prevented the band from making the strides it needed to at that time, so in came Hammett from rival band Exodus. Though for many whose images of James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich only span back to the last 20 years or so, seeing these pics of them as naive, headbanging youngstars, will spark a new outlook on the duo.

Like I mentioned earlier, this is not some thick, all-encompassing tome on the world of Metallica, but a brief picture album so to speak of their formative years that any Metallica fan will want to check out and add to their bookshelf.
